Is Deck Refinishing Right for Your Home?

Is Deck Refinishing Right for Your Home?

Decking is a great asset to any home or HOA property. It provides a place for people to gather and enjoy the outdoors while reconnecting with one another. But decks need TLC, and your deck may need refinishing to correct surface imperfections and prevent structural damage.

When Is it Time for Deck Refinishing?

There’s no single right answer when it comes to the best time to refinish your deck. But you likely have a sense of your deck’s overall condition.

  • Can you see fading, discoloration, or imperfections in the existing stain? This is the easiest to spot, but you’d be surprised how little we pay attention to something we stand and walk on. Look closely at your deck to see what shape the wood and the stain are in. If you can observe damage, it’s definitely time for deck refinishing.
  • Have you had a lot of extreme weather? If you’ve had seasons of heavy rainfall (or snowfall, depending on the time of year), moisture accumulation, freezing and thawing, and temperature changes are all going to impact your staining or paint finish over time.
  • Do you remember the last time your deck was refinished? Most experts recommend restaining a deck every 2-3 years, and repainting every 10 or so. If you know it’s been longer than recommended, or if you can’t remember the last time your deck has been resurfaced, it’s time to take care of it.

Of course, restaining or repainting are both investments that should be planned for. But waiting too long to refinish decking could lead to wood rot, which brings with it a much higher price tag, and many more safety risks for your family, or people living on your property.

Deck Refinishing: Step by Step

If you’ve never planned a deck refinishing project before, here are the steps:

  • Inspect: Your decking should be thoroughly expected to assess weak spots and existing damage or imperfections.
  • Repair: Then it’s time to repair those surface imperfections, so you know all the hard work of staining or repainting your deck won’t be in vain.
  • Clean: The deck needs to be cleaned and cleared of everything so that it can be completely washed, treated, and painted.
  • Power Wash: Power washing removes stubborn debris and particulates from the surface that would otherwise leave it rough and grainy.
  • Sand: Smooth surfaces are happy surfaces when it comes time to seal, stain, and/or paint. Sanding the deck after power washing means the paint will go on smoother (and stick to the surface better) resulting in an ideal finish.
  • Seal/Stain: Finally, it’s time to seal the wood with professional-grade stain or paint to protect it. Each of these approaches has advantages to preserving the longevity and natural beauty of your deck.
